In the course of the nineteenth century the older term “fable” and the newer term “myth” competed for favor among English speakers, and “myth” eventually predominated.3 It was a reflection of the times, then, that in when Thomas Bulfinch published his popular compendium of mythology, he called it The Age of Fable; or, Stories of. Ancient Myth, Folklore, and Legend 3 credits In many ways, world folklore is the basis of the arts and also a strong influence on areas as diverse as psychology and religion. This course acquaints the students with an array of traditional folk topics, including myths, fables, aphorisms, superstitions, fairy tales, and other sources of folk belief.
Together they created an incredibly rich body of popular oral stories that include, but range well beyond, mythology—from heroic legends, fairy tales, and fables to ghost stories, urban legends, and jokes. This unique anthology presents the largest collection of these tales ever assembled. "Traditional literature encompasses books rendered from oral tradition--stories that have been passed down for ages (Kiefer, )--and as a result are commonly shared throughout the world.
